No one likes to talk about it, but fecal incontinence, or the inability to control your bowel movements, affects an estimated 40 million adults in the United States and Europe. If you suffer from fecal incontinence and other treatments have failed you, we want you to know that hope is still in sight!
We recently expanded our menu with a ground-breaking new treatment for fecal and urinary incontinence, an FDA-approved implant device called Axonics Therapy®.
Here’s a closer look at Axonics Therapy and how it may help you.
Axonics Therapy is a Rechargeable Neuromodulation System, which is a small implant that is inserted into the bowel or bladder, depending on your needs. Once inserted, the implant is operated by you with a simple remote control device, which stimulates the nerves in your target area to provide noticeable improvements in your symptoms. Best of all, Axonics is designed to last 15 years and contains a rechargeable battery, eliminating the need for frequent surgeries to replace the implant or batteries. On December 23rd, 2019, Dr Aguirre was the first surgeon in Colorado to implant Axonics Therapy, implanting one patient for overactive bladder and another for fecal incontinence.
Since 2001, Dr. Aguirre has offered sacral nerve stimulation (an implant called InterStim Therapy®) for bladder health, and remains one of the leading implanters in the state of Colorado. He has used InterStim successfully in hundreds of patients to treat urge urinary incontinence, urinary urgency/frequency, and non-obstructive urinary retention. In 2006, as soon as InterStim Therapy was FDA-approved for fecal incontinence, he was one of the first in Colorado to use it for this indication.
Dr. Aguirre is proud to offer both InterStim and Axonics to his patients. Following a detailed discussion regarding the pros and cons of each therapy, an independent and unique decision is made by each patient.
In addition to Axonics and InterStim Therapy, Aguirre Specialty Care offers several other state-of-the-art treatments for urinary incontinence, including FemiLift™, The O-Shot®, LEO® (laser enhanced O-Shot), The Viveve™ Treatment, suburethral slings, pelvic floor physical therapy, and low-dose vaginal estrogen therapy. During your personal consultation, Dr. Oscar A. Aguirre, a board-certified urogynecologist who has devoted his entire career to helping women improve their urogynecological health — and who now can also help men with Axonics Therapy! — will help you choose the ideal treatment or combination of treatments for you during your personal consultation.
