Sclerotherapy is a procedure to help reduce the appearance of spider, reticular and varicose veins. During sclerotherapy, the veins are injected with a specially made solution called sodium tertadecyl sulfate, which is the only FDA-approved sclerosing agent on the market and has better results and less pain than saline. The sodium tertadecyl sulfate collapses the veins and decreases their appearance. While not every single vein may disappear, each session will result in the visible veins becoming lighter and lighter.
In most situations, two or more sessions are necessary to receive the best results possible. Sessions of sclerotherapy are scheduled for 30 minutes or one hour, depending on the amount and size of the veins to be treated.
