What is Urogynecology?

Urogynecology is a medical specialty dedicated to the treatment of pelvic floor disorders. The pelvic floor consists of the muscles, nerves, and connective tissue that support the uterus, vagina, bladder, and rectum and help these organs function correctly. The pelvic floor can be damaged by childbirth, repeated heavy lifting, chronic disease or surgery.

Common pelvic floor disorders:

  • Urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine)
  • Urinary retention (difficulty with emptying the bladder)
  • Frequency of urination (urinating more than eight times in 24 hours)
  • Nocturia (waking from sleep to urinate two or more times per night)
  • Vaginal prolapse (experienced as a “bulge” at the opening of the vagina or a sense that “something is falling out”)
  • Fecal incontinence (involuntary loss of stool)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Pelvic floor or bladder pain
  • Pain with intercourse

Women do not need to “learn to live with” these conditions since effective help is available through urogynecology.

A urogynecologist is an obstetrician/gynecologist who has completed fellowship training in the evaluation and treatment of pelvic floor disorders. Dr. Oscar A.
