Cystoscopy
Why do cystoscopy?
To visualize the urethra and bladder to detect structural defects, stones, tumors, sutures from previous surgeries, inflammation and/or other abnormal conditions.
How is is done?
This procedure is usually performed in less than five minutes. A small catheter-like instrument with a camera will be advanced through your urethra into your bladder. The image will be projected onto a monitor in the exam room. Rarely, a biopsy may be performed. No anesthesia is necessary as most people experience minimal discomfort with cystoscopy. You will be able to drive yourself to and from the office and can return to your normal daily activities immediately after the procedure.
Instructions:
Please drink at least 16 ounces of water during the hour before your cystoscopy. You do not need to come in with a full bladder for this procedure; we just need you to be well-hydrated. Do not take medications that drastically alter the color of your urine for 24 hours prior to testing. This includes pyridium, Azo-Standard, Uristat, Urelle, Prosed or others like it. Discoloration from multivitamins is acceptable.
